5 statement you must not believe if you want to learn english
You are familiar with them. Here we go
1 Learning English is piece of cake
Do not believe people and advertisements that say it is possible to learn English in 2-3 months. I can assure you that there is no easy and short way for success in learning English and for success itself. Learning English requires lots of patience and hard work!
As you know, there are more than one million words not mentioning phrasal verbs, idioms. Besides, there are 26 tenses in this language (16 of them are active, 10 of them passive). But, it doesn’t mean you can’t learn the language faster! I warrant that you can study the language in a year. But you have to work and improve you language everyday!
2 More hours I study, faster I learn
This is perhaps another big mistake new students make. I guess you heard this saying millions of times which says `Don’t study hard, study smart!` Believe me, you weren’t fooled. 8 hours of studying till 1am doesn’t make you any smarter. In fact, it makes you harm due to lack of sleep. You may feel depressed and exhausted. Instead, you should organize your routine and give at most two hours for studying.
3 I need electronic dictionary
Now you may ask why it is a mistake. Let me explain. Recent studies show that students who use paper dictionary are far better in learning new words and memorizing them. Still unclear? Let me continue! Your brain is smart. It says `Why should I remember the word if I can get translation by one or two clicks in my machine`.
Simply saying, your brain won’t want to remember them. Another advantage of paper dictionaries is that while searching the necessary words you learn other words as well and it usually happens without you knowing it. So, I recommend you to buy an ordinary dictionary rather than electronic ones.
4 I can learn grammar later
This one is really stupid! In my 3-year experience in studying this language, I have heard this statement thousand times. And I can surely say that it leads to more problems. Even though they learn grammar, they do it only in lessons.
But when it comes studying at home, they usually focus on other stuff! But thanks God that there are loads of students who do not forget about it. It’s kind of 50 to 50. Half of them focus on grammar, others do not.
Please, try to understand that without knowing grammatical rules and structures, you won’t be able to make sentences in speaking quickly. Therefore, study grammar yourself and feel free to ask our teacher for help =)
5 Don’t speak with them, their level is higher than yours
I understand why you do so. You don’t want to be laughed at by them. I feel your pain. Anyway, you shouldn’t be afraid of speaking with them. Forget the phrases like `I don’t know many words which they know`, `My pronunciation is not perfect`. They were like you too!
They may have had similar problems, then why won’t you ask them how they had solved them? The experience of the students who study in higher courses is always a good motive to study harder. By communicating with them, you will find out what to do next to improve your language. Don’t be afraid!
I know that not all of you do aforementioned things but anyway be careful with them. Keep learning! Remember, nothing comes easily!
